The Automotive Industry’s Slump: 18 Consecutive Months of Declining Sales in Thailand.

Thailand’s automotive industry has seen a recent decline, with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) reporting a January 2025 production output of 107,103 units, a 24.63% decrease from the previous year. This marks the 18th consecutive month of falling automotive production in the country. Vehicle sales across Thailand in the first month of 2025 reached only 48,092 units, a 12.26% drop compared to January 2024. Thai automotive exports for January stood at 62,321 units, a 28.13% decrease, the lowest in 33 months, due to intensifying competition from Chinese automakers. Thailand is the largest automotive manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia and a key export base for leading global brands such as Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Honda. The once-popular A-segment cars are losing their appeal to Vietnamese customers due to the rise of electric vehicles in the same size category. The shift in consumer preferences is causing a decline in sales for models like the Hyundai Grand i10, Toyota Wigo, and Kia Morning. Declining Market Share In 2020, the A-segment sold 47,280 units, with VinFast Fadil and Hyundai Grand i10 being the top contributors. The following year, VinFast Fadil became the best-selling car in Vietnam, with 24,128 units sold, outperforming many established models. However, with the exit of VinFast Fadil in July 2022, and the discontinuation of Toyota Wigo and Honda Brio, the segment’s sales dropped to 27,833 units in 2022 and further declined to 11,159 units in 2023.
