“Turn on Your Motorcycle Headlights from 6 PM: A New Rule for Safer Roads in 2025”
The 2024 Road Traffic Safety Law, effective from January 1, 2025, has brought about changes to the regulations on motorcycle headlight usage. Specifically, Article 20 of the 2024 Road Traffic Safety Law stipulates the following:
– Motorcyclists and operators of special-purpose motorcycles participating in road traffic must turn on their front headlights during the period from 6:00 PM the previous day to 6:00 AM the next day, or when there is fog, smoke, dust, rain, or bad weather that limits visibility.
– Motorcyclists and operators of special-purpose motorcycles must turn off their high beams and turn on their low beams in the following cases:
+ When encountering pedestrians crossing the road;
+ When traveling on road sections through residential areas with functioning lighting systems;
+ When encountering oncoming traffic, unless there is an anti-glare median strip;
+ When turning at an intersection.
– Motorcyclists and operators of special-purpose motorcycles performing work on the road must turn on their yellow warning lights.
On the other hand, the regulations on headlight usage according to the 2008 Traffic Law and Decree 100/2019/ND-CP are as follows:
– Drivers must turn on their headlights during the period from 7:00 PM the previous day to 5:00 AM the next day, and when there is fog or bad weather that limits visibility.
– Headlights must be turned on when driving through road tunnels.
– High beams must not be used in urban areas and residential areas, except for priority vehicles on duty as per regulations.
– High beams must not be used when avoiding oncoming traffic.
Thus, as of January 1, 2025, the mandatory timeframe for motorcyclists to turn on their headlights has changed. However, Decree 100/2019 currently only stipulates fines for not turning on headlights from 7:00 PM. Therefore, we await further guidance from the authorities regarding penalties for not turning on headlights from 6:00 PM.
According to current regulations, the fine for motorcycles or motorbikes that do not turn on their headlights during the specified timeframe ranges from 100,000 VND to 200,000 VND.
