Thailand Retakes the Lead in Auto Imports to Vietnam, Surpassing Indonesia

According to a report by the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in the first half of May, the country imported a total of 9,324 completely built-up (CBU) automobiles, with a total value of nearly 215 million USD.
The group of automobiles with 9 seats or fewer still accounted for the majority, with a total of 7,226 units cleared through customs from May 1st to May 15th. The total import value of this group was 132.8 million USD, equivalent to an average import value of 18,378 USD per car, or approximately 459 million VND per car.
From the beginning of the year, Vietnam has completed the import of a total of 74,324 CBU automobiles of all kinds, with a total value of approximately 1.615 billion USD. Automobiles with fewer than 9 seats accounted for the highest proportion, with 57,349 units and a value of over 1.01 billion USD since the beginning of the year.
As of the end of April, Thailand had returned to being the top provider of imported automobiles for Vietnamese customers. A total of 24,052 cars were imported from Thailand into Vietnam in the first four months, while 23,915 cars of Indonesian origin arrived in Vietnam during the same period.
China ranked third on the list of top providers of imported automobiles for Vietnamese customers. As of the end of April, a total of 14,070 vehicles of various types had been exported from China to Vietnam.

In terms of average import value, automobiles originating from China outperformed those imported from Thailand and Indonesia. With a total value of over 451 million USD since the beginning of the year, automobiles imported from China had an average value of approximately 32,072 USD.
The average import value of automobiles originating from Thailand was 19,348 USD (approximately 501 million VND), while the average value of automobiles imported from Indonesia was 14,077 USD, or about 365 million VND.
The corresponding figures for automobiles imported from the United States and Japan were 37,775 USD (over 978 million VND) and 49,067 USD (more than 1.27 billion VND), respectively.
Notable models include the Ford Explorer (priced at 2.099 billion VND in Vietnam), imported from the United States, and the Subaru Crosstrek (from 1.098 billion VND), Toyota Land Cruiser (from 4.58 billion VND), and Honda Civic Type R (2.999 billion VND), all imported from Japan.

Notable models imported from Thailand include the Ford Everest (1.099- 1.545 billion VND) and the Toyota Camry (1.232- 1.542 billion VND). The Toyota Yaris Cross (650-773 million VND) and Mitsubishi Xforce (599-705 million VND) are B-segment SUVs imported from Indonesia by Japanese automakers.
After four months, according to a report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), the sales of imported automobiles reached 52,870 units, higher than the sales of 48,964 assembled automobiles in the same period.
Completely imported models that are currently popular with Vietnamese customers include the Ford Everest (3,224 units in the first four months), Toyota Yaris Cross (3,197 units), Mitsubishi Xforce (2,545 units), and Toyota Innova Cross (2,104 units).
Of the total 5,363 Mitsubishi Xpander units sold since the beginning of the year, 4,013 were imported units, accounting for nearly 75%.
